Abstract
A proof is given which shows that the general susceptibility tensor of any medium should be symmetric in an interchange of its upper and lower indices. Experiments are then described in which the magneto-electric susceptibility of a heat-treated chromium oxide disc is measured by either applying a magnetic field or an electric field and the results obtained do not contradict the results of the theory. A theory of the heat-treatment process for chromium oxide is also given which fits the experimental results very well and makes it possible to predict the saturation value, or true single crystal value, of the magneto-electric susceptibility from a set of measurements taken on a heat-treated polycrystalline sample. Keywords
