Pion-Pion Scattering and Low-Energy Pion Production

Abstract
A model for the reaction π+N2π+N at low energies, with ππ scattering lengths as parameters, discussed in a previous analysis is extended by removing the assumption that a0a2=52. The parameters are determined by using the π+ angular distribution from π+pπ+π++n at 430 Mev and the total cross section for π++pπ++π++n at 470 Mev. We find two acceptable sets for the ππ scattering lengths: a0=0.50 μ1, a1=0.07 μ1, a2=0.16 μ1 and a0=0.65 μ1, a1=0.07 μ1, a2=0.14 μ1. The total cross sections for the various charge channel and for single partial waves are computed. The predictions of this model are in qualitative agreement with experiment.
