Abstract
Gonadal tissues of I. obsoleta were incubated in sterile isosmotic saline plus antibiotics and in modifications of 2 established in vitro maintenance media for molluscan tissues. The efficacy of these 2 media was determined by measuring the O2 consumption of the gonadal tissues following incubation and by examining the tissues histologically and ultrastructurally. Tissues incubated in either of the 2 media had significantly higher mean levels of O2 consumption per gram dry tissue when compared to tissues incubated in isosmotic saline at 6, 12, 24 and 48 h. Histological and ultrastructural examination of tissues maintained in media revealed fewer pathological alterations than in those tissues maintained in isosmotic saline at these times periods. This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
