Abstract
In view of the lack of development of cancer in the rectum or sigmoid following ureterosigmoidostomies because of tumor of the bladder, the effects of a carcinogenic agent, namely, purified beta-naphthylamine (300 mg. daily), on the normal and substituted isolated sigmoid loop bladder of large dogs was investigated. In some of the dogs the urine was diverted from 1 kidney into the bowel by ureterosigmoidostomy. The carcinogenic agent produced practically all types of epithelial bladder tumors common to man. In addition, a primary carcinoma of the ureter was observed in 2 instances, and early neoplastic proliferative changes in the renal pelvis and ureter were found in another. The carcinogenic agent failed to produce tumors in isolated sigmoid loop bladders. The significance of the findings is discussed.
