Abstract
Tympanostomy tubes are unique among a host of other reported treatment methods in having been shown consistently able to bring about sustained ventilation of the middle ear in children. And it is sustained ventilation that is often required in order to treat successfully a variety of chronic middle ear disorders. Other occasional complications of typanostomy tube treatment include secondary infection accompanied by otorrhea through the tube, especially in patients with cleft palate, and dislocation of the tube into the middle ear cavity. The risk-benefit aspects of typanostomy tube treatment for secretory otitis media and recurrent acute otitis media were discussed.
