Resident Expectations of Morning Report

Abstract
MORNING report has been a cornerstone of internal medicine (IM) residency training programs for many years.1-4 Approximately 98% of programs have a daily morning report, the format of which can vary considerably between institutions.1,5 Participants include house staff, guest attending physicians, program directors, and department chairs, and they may have varying goals. The diverse perspectives of the attendees can lead to a mismatch between the goals and format of morning report; the program director, for example, may want to review every admission, while the residents may prefer having a few cases presented and discussed in greater detail.6 To avoid this goal-format mismatch, the goals of each party should be clearly defined.6
