Abstract
Design situations in which mechanical wear can compromise system performance and a time-dependent wearout failure mechanism are discussed. Mechanical wear arises from the repeated contact of surfaces. The focus is on various physical phenomena responsible for removal of material. Experimental investigative methods, measurement techniques, and mathematical descriptions that make diagnostic and predictive engineering procedures feasible are presented. These facilitate the selection and optimization of contacting surfaces.Keywords
