Abstract
This is a review of selected literature related to the hypnotic susceptibility of psychotic patients and the efficacy of utilizing hypnotherapy with this clinical population. Psychotic patients are equally amenable to treatment by hypnosis as any other group of psychopathologies, when certain conceptual and technique considerations are addressed. An egopsychological perspective is utilized to develop the conceptual framework underlying this approach, and a paradigm for hypnotherapeutic intervention is outlined. Consideration is given to induction technique, the management of specific psychotic symptoms, the utilization of hypnotic imagery to strengthen ego boundaries and enhance ego functioning, and the significant manifestations and management of psychotic transference in hypnotherapy.
