Glycolysis in Plasmodium gallinaceum.

Abstract
The rate of glycolysis of P. gallinaceum (cause of chicken malaria) was determined and a formula developed for its prediction. This also involved detn. of the glycolysis rates of normal mature erythrocytes and reticulocytes of the chicken. Normal chicken blood with a very low percentage of reticulocytes was found to have an hourly glucose consumption rate of approx. 8.7 mg./100 ml., and values up to 74.7 mg./100 ml. were observed for parasitized blood. The glucose consumption/sq. [mu]/hr. was 3.42 x 10-13 mg., 2.41 x 10-12 mg., and 3.00 x 10-11 mg. for adult red cells, reticulocytes, and parasites respectively.
