Abstract
Comparisons were made of the metabolism of D- and L-thyroxine by enzyme systems prepared from rat kidney. With slices, D-thyroxine, unlike L-thyroxine, was not deiodinated to triiodothyronine. With the mitochondrial enzyme system Dthyroxine was unaltered while L-thyroxine was actively converted to tetraiodothyroacetic acid. It is possible that the failure of D-thyroxine to undergo these transformations may account for its metabolic inactivity. Keywords
