Abstract
The ester glucuronides of alpha-ethylbutyric, alpha-ethylhexanoic and veratric acids have high affinities for mouse-liver beta-glucuronidase, as measured by their effects in depressing the enzymatic hydrolysis of phenolphthalein glucuronide. alpha-Ethyl-hexanoyl glucuronide was rapidly hydrolyzed by beta-glucuronidase preparations. The pH/activity curve was similar to those for ether glucuronides, and hydrolysis was inhibited by saccharo-l:4-lactone. beta-Glucuronidase did not appear to possess general esterase pro- perties. On the basis of these findings it was concluded that ester glucuronides are substrates for beta-glucuronidase.Keywords
