Abstract
Adrenalectomized mice were subjected to various types of stress. The protective action of cortisone acetate and desoxycorticosterone were studied in all cases. In some experiments the effect of estrone, testosterone propionate and epinephrine were also followed. Stress which involves hyper-kalemia was induced either by injection of KC1 or by giving large doses of glucose by stomach tube. In both cases cortisone acetate and desoxycorticosterone are equally effective. In stress involving hypoglycemia, insulin administration or exposure to cold, cortisone acetate is effective, while desoxycorticosterone is not. Cortisone acetate also affords protection against histamine shock, anaphylactic shock and snake venom poisoning, whereas desoxycorticosterone does not.
