The Sulfonamides

Abstract
Use of Sulfonamides in Combination with AntibioticsWhen penicillin and streptomycin first became available they were often given together with sulfonamides in cases in which, used alone, they failed to produce a prompt response. In some cases the use of such mixtures was based on in vitro observations suggesting an additive or even synergistic activity.215 216 217 In others, it was predicated on the unproved premise that a "broad-spectrum" effect could be achieved. As more potent antimicrobial agents have been developed, the administration of antibiotic-sulfonamide combinations has decreased. However, clinical experience suggests that these have better therapeutic results than either agent alone . . .
