Abstract
Cells were labeled with sodium radiochromate (NaCr5l04) and intracellular distribution and valence state of radiochromium studied. Of total intracellular radioactivity, 71% was associated with the soluble cyto-plasmic fraction; of the radioactivity of the latter, ethanol precipitated 52% with proteins, 46% remaining in the supernate in dialyzable form. Hexavalent chromium was reduced intracellularly to the trivalent state. The results suggest that the cell membrane of the Ehrlich ascites tumor cell is impermeable to Cr+++ ions, and that stability of the intracellular label is not dependant on protein binding alone. Keywords
