41—THE TORQUE IN TWISTED SINGLES YARNS

Abstract
The expression for the torque in a twisted yarn is derived by summing the components of torque due to fibre tension, fibre torsion, and fibre bending. Of these three components, the sum of the last two is small compared with the torque due to fibre tension and hence the instantaneous torque L may be estimated simply by calculating the torque due to fibre tension as follows: This linear relationship between torque and twist is in agreement with measurements made on twisted yarns by means of a torsion-pendulum apparatus. However, time effects must be considered to explain the difference in magnitude between the measured torque and the calculated value.
