Abstract
The history of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) is traced from its origin as Rapport''s vascon-strictor substance and Erspamer''s enteramine. Udenfriend''s development of serotonin''s metabolic pathway is correlated with its implied physiological significance in the central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, blood, and cardiovascular system. Its current role in anaphylactic shock and as the mediator of reserpine activity is discussed. It deserves the role of hormone first ascribed to it by Erspamer. Keywords
