Abstract
A review which attempts to analyze current knowledge of the chemistry in solution of metachromatic dyes, of chromotropes and of their interaction. This is followed by a survey of recent studies of metachromatic staining of tissues, including a consideration of methods used and their interpretation. An attempt is made to relate chemical theory and histochemical use. Keywords
