Abstract
The low power nonlinear response of Yb3+-doped fibre Bragg gratings is investigated near 1550 nm. A modulation depth of 63% was achieved for a launched 980 nm pump power of 20 mW, 53% of which may be attributed to thermal effects and 10% to electronic effects associated with the dopant. Keywords
