Abstract
The term 'labour society' is often used in a non-theoretical manner. This has led to a debate in which the main grounds for supporting or criticizing the concept as an appropriate means of understanding the crisis of modern society seem to be either empirical study or personal conviction In response to an article which was published recently in this journal (Aho 1985) and which in my opinion shows how such a non-theoretical use can lead to miscomprehension of the central concept, I develop a theoretical framework in relation to the notion of labour society. Using this theoretical concept, I shall then interpret some of the empirical tendencies in modern society; in the light of post-war social developments, these provide justification for a discussion couched in terms of the concept of 'labour society'.
