Abstract
THE prevalence of mycotic pulmonary disease, especially the chronic form of histoplasmosis that mimics tuberculosis, has led many laboratories to attempt routine isolation of the fungus from the sputum in suspected cases. However, experience indicates that successful mycologic identifications take time and require exacting technic.The direct method of fluorescent-antibody staining has been found to have many useful applications in studies of bacterial and viral diseases.
