Abstract
Six metabolites of quinine were detected in the urine of rabbits given its monohydrochloride orally. Of the metabolites detected, three major ones were quantitatively separated and characterized as 2′-hydroxyquinine, 2′,3-dihydroxyquinine, and 2′,6′-dihydroxycinchonidine. No unchanged alkaloid was detected in the urine. The present results indicate that the most important reaction in the metabolism of the alkaloid in the rabbit is the formation of 2′-carbostyril derivatives. Keywords
