SENSITIVITY OF ABDOMEN OF RAT TO X-IRRADIATION

Abstract
The 28 day LD50 for X-radiation was 1950 r for abdomen-shielded rats, with most deaths occurring 9-12 days after exposure. Rats irradiated with only the abdomen exposed exhibited an LD50 of 1025 r, with the peak mortality occurring on the 4th and 5th days. Symptomatology in the latter group appeared identical with that following total body irradiation whereas the former showed distinctive differences. The sizes of the shields used were such that equal gram-roentgen exposures would be received with both types at a given air dose level.
