Abstract
The morphology of the adult, metacercaria, cercaria, and sporocyst stages of Prosthodendrium (Acanthatrium) anaplocami is described. The cercariae were found experimentally to penetrate larvae of the mayfly, Hexagenia bilineata, where growth and development occurs. The encystment of metacercariae was found to be associated with the subimaginal ecdysis of the mayfly, and further that the worms are not infective to mice before encystment has taken place. Adult worms develop to maturity in about 10 days in the small intestine of mice. A brief statement of the similarity of the genera Acanthatrium Faust. 1919 and Prosthodendrium Dollfus, 1931 is made.
