Abstract
The directions of remanent magnetisation in 152 samples of cave silt and clay from Masson Mine, Derbyshire, have been examined. In the Clay Shaft, Old Jants Mine, a 4m sequence of alternating clay, silt and sand provides the first detailed British record of a geomagnetic polarity transition (reversed to normal). Alternating geomagnetic polarity is recorded in sediments from the Clay Cavern. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility anisotropy suggest that during sedimentation phreatic flow was in a NW to SE direction towards the Derwent Gorge. Keywords
