LIMITATIONS OF RENAL FUNCTION DETERMINATION

Abstract
PSP excretion, Volhard type conc. and dilution, early morning sp. gr., and max. urea clearance tests were detd. in 100 patients with no evidence of renal disease and compared with results of the same tests in 290 patients with suspected renal disease. The tests did not give parallel findings in mild or moderate disease. The 15 min. excretion of PSP was diminished more often than the urea clearance in the diseased group. This was particularly true of the arteriosclerotic group, the degenerative and toxic Bright''s disease group. In 68 instances evidence of poor kidney function was found by but 1 of the test methods, 2 test methods yielding results in the normal range in each of the 68 patients. For the series no single test of kidney function was entirely adequate.
