Effect of ovarian steroids on DNA synthesis in explanted human adult resting mammary tissues

Abstract
A study has been made of the selective influence of the ovarian steroids, estradiol and progesterone, on three distinct parts of cultured, explanted human adult resting mammary tissue: lobules, interlobular and large ducts. The addition of estradiol elicited the highest stimulation of 3H-thymidine incorporation in large ducts. When progesterone was added DNA synthesis occurred mainly in interlobular ducts. The isolated action of both steroids on lobules was quantitatively comparable, but the time sequence of DNA synthesis was different. The possible significance of these findings is discussed. L'influence sélective des stéroïdes ovariens, l'estradiol et la progestérone, a été étudiée sur trois segments distincts de la glande mammaire humaine adulte au repos explantée: les lobules, les canaux interlobulaires et les grands galactophores. L'estradiol a une action plus marquée sur la stimulation de l'incorporation de la thymidine tritiée dans les grands galactophores. La progestérone induit la synthèse d'ADN surtout dans les canaux interlobulaires. L'action isolée des deux stéroïdes sur les lobules est comparable au point de vue quantitatif, mais la séquence chronologique diffère. L'auteur envisage la signification éventuelle de ces observations.Keywords
