Abstract
Fatal acquired hypofibrinogenemia was observed in an adult female. The criteria for this diagnosis included: (1) failure of the patient''s venous blood to clot, (2) negative Lee-White clotting test after 24 hrs, (3) repeated fibrinogen determinations showing values ranging from 0 to 118 mg.% At autopsy a giant-sized cavernous hemangioma of the liver was found, with its vascular spaces filled by pure fibrin thrombi, fresh or partially organized by fibrous tissue. The possibility is discussed that the fibrinogen deficiency in this patient might have resulted from defibrination of the circulating blood following continuous deposition of fibrin in the myriad vascular spaces of the giant hemangioma. Keywords
