Abstract
The identification of giftedness is a challenge fraught with controversy. In this article, Raven's Matrices are reviewed from the standpoint of their efficacy in the gifted identification process. Reliability, validity and fairness of the tests are discussed, followed by a comparison with other tests of intelligence. It is concluded that, despite problems with narrowness of scope and standardization practices, these tests provide a useful screening device for educators providing programming for intellectually gifted children. The author thanks Linda Siegel for her help in conceptualizing the topic and for her editing suggestions.
