Abstract
In 10 isolated canine prostate glands, which histo-logically showed parenchymatous hypertrophy, the minimum measurements longitudinal, transverse and/or dorso-ventral were not less than 4 cm, and the minimum weight was 38 g or 1.4 g/kg of body weight. The parenchymatous hypertrophic processes are not regularly limited to the paraprostatic glandular tissue in the dog, but include the peripheral parenchyma proper as well, and are most probably due to excessive androgenic stimulation. The oral or intramuscular administration of 5-10 mg daily stilbesterol for 10-20 days regularly promotes a regression of the hypertrophic prostate gland towards normal size after 2-3 weeks. When the hypertrophied gland is reduced to approximately normal size, further administration of stilbesterol will not produce further reduction of the gland. This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
