Abstract
Self-reported reasons for discontinuing marijuana use were examined in a sample of sixty-one former marijuana users identified in a survey of a group of 237 students at a Central European sports training facility. The most common reasons given for discontinuing marijuana use were dislike for the effects (14.75%), athletic training regimen (13.11%), health reasons (11.48%) and mental/emotional problems (11.48%). Persons who had been regular users most often discontinued due to their training regimen. Experimental/occasional users most often stopped because they disliked the effects. Research on this topic is potentially important to drug educators but premature generalizations should be avoided. Keywords
