ESTROGENS IN MARINE INVERTEBRATES

Abstract
Lipid extracts of marine invertebrate tissues were assayed for estrogen content by their effect on the estrogen-sensitive isocitric dehydrogenase of human placenta. The ovaries of Mactra (Spisula) solidissima contained significant amounts of estrogenic material. Other tissues, including the ovaries of Asterias forbesi, Arbacia punctulata, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis, Loligo pealei, Busycon canaliculatum, Carcinides maenas, Homarus americanus, and Limulus polyphemus, the whole tissue of Microciona prolifera and the liver of Homarus americanus all contained less than 50 [mu]g estradiol equivalents per kg of fresh tissue.
