FIBRINOGENOPENIA AND FIBRINOLYSIS IN ACUTE MYELOGENOUS LEUKEMIA

Abstract
A case of acute myelogenous leukemia with severe fibrinogenopenia is described. The fibrinogenopenia was believed to be due to fibrinolysis by the fact that complete lysis of the clot occurred within 24 hours. Evidence is presented to show that clot dissolution occurs only as a result of fibrinolysis and not because of the fibrinogenopenia per se. Although fibrinogenopenia is rare in acute leukemia it is an important contributory cause of the multiple hemorrhages and death in these patients.
