Magnetic excitations in the quadrupolar compound TmZn

Abstract
A generalised susceptibility formalism is developed in order to account for collective magnetic excitations in rare earth compounds, in the presence of both dipolar and quadrupolar exchange interactions. The theory is applied to the quadrupolar compound TmZn. It turns out that the experimental dispersion of magnetic excitations arises mainly from the dipolar exchange interactions.Keywords
