Socioeconomic effects of ankylosing spondylitis in females: a comparison of 25 female with 25 male subjects

Abstract
Summary 25 men and 25 women with ankylosing spondylitis were interviewed, using a structural questionnaire, covering a profile of the disease and of socioeconomic areas. Particular attention was paid to sexual activity, pregnancy and child-rearing. Significant problems in most areas asked aboût were found, although childbearing was not curtailed. Tiredness was responsible for a lot of disability but the women managed housework reasonably well and also had a fairly good employment record. Résumé 25 hommes et 25 femmes atteints de spondylose ankylosante ont été interrogés à l'aide d'un questionnaire systématique sur la maladie proprement dite et sur ses conséquences socio-économiques. Une attention toute particulière a été accordée à l'activité sexuelle, à la grossesse et à l'éducation des enfants. D'importants problèmes ont été mis en évidence dans la plupart de ces domaines. Il ressort de cette étude que la fatigue semble ětre responsable d'un grand nombre d'infirmités. Les femmes assument relativement bien les taˇches ménagères ainsi que leur carrière professionnelle. Zusammenfassung 25 Männer und 25 Frauen mit Spondylitis ankylosans wurden mittels eines strukturierten Fragebogens befragt, welcher ein Krankheitsprofil und sozial-ökonomische Probleme berücksichtigte. Besondere Beachtung wurde dem Geschlechtsleben, der Schwangerschaft und dem Aufziehen der Kinder geschenkt. In den meisten gefragten Bereichen wurden beachtliche Probleme gefunden, obgleich Schwangerschaft und Geburtsakt nicht beeinträchtigt waren. Müdigkeit war für einen grossen Teil der Behinderungen verantwortlich, doch erledigten die befragten Frauen ihre Hausarbeit sehr befriedigend, und ihr Ruf als Arbeitskraft war gut. Résumen Se entrevistaron 25 varones y 25 mujeres afectos de espondilitis anquilosante, empleando un cuestionario estructural que cubría un perfil de la enfermedad y también sus aspectos socioeconómicos. Se prestó atención en particular, a la actividad sexual, el embarazo y la cría de niños. Se encontraron problemas importantes en casi todos los ámbitos investigados, si bien la gestación no pareció estar restringida. El cansancio fue causa de mucha incapacitación, pero las mujeres conseguian efectuar sus tareas domésticas razonablemente bien y también asistieron a su trabajo con bastante constancia.
