Abstract
Using data on 1795 children from 15 State and 25 Catholic academically oriented elementary schools, this article examines whether there is a differential school sector effect for Belgium. Taking into account the effect of sex, family intactness, maternal employment status, parental support and parental involvement in children's education, it was found that the influence of parental socio‐economic status upon children's academic achievement (GPA) is not as strong in Catholic schools as it is in State schools. It is suggested that this effect is due to the more strenuous demands of Catholic schools in Belgium. Keywords
