Abstract
Triply differential cross sections for photon impact double ionization of helium have been calculated using leading order perturbation theory to describe the interaction of the electrons. The results suggest that even at relatively large excess energies, the photofragmentation process is mostly due to photoionization of one electron followed by an ionizing electron-electron collision, rather than a `shake-off' mechanism. Keywords
