Abstract
Exposure of KCl:Sn crystals to x or rays at 77 K results in the trapping of electrons by the ions to form centers and positive holes to form , centers, as shown by EPR spectra. Three distinct and well-defined centers have been observed. Each consists of an approximately linear molecule ion with the molecular axis along . The center formed upon irradiation at 77 K has orthorhombic symmetry with and along ; this has a positive-ion vacancy, , in a nearest-neighbor (nn) position to in the plane. On warming to 190 K a second center is formed which also has orthorhombic symmetry with and along ; this has a in a next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) position in the plane. Near 240 K the moves out of the neighborhood producing a third center, an isolated Sn with tetragonal symmetry, Sn[tetrag]. The Sn molecule ion has three principal optical transitions near 200 nm which are perturbed by the . Both the energies and the polarizations of these transitions depend on the location of the with respect to the Sn....
