Abstract
Studies are reported on the effect of age, sex, castration and the administration of testosterone and estradiol on concentrations of 4 fatty acid esters of cholesterol in sera of rats. Cholesteryl arachidonate levels were significantly higher in females than in males. Levels of cholesteryl arachidonate distinguished the female ester pattern from the male, as the other 3 major cholesteryl fatty acid ester levels were found to be similar. The characteristic patterns were evident at 21 days of age and were still present at 240 days of age. Castration had no obvious effect on the serum cholesterol esters measured. Cholesteryl arachidonate was decreased in both sexes during the administration of testosterone and increased in male rats when estradiol was given. Cholesteryl ester fatty acid patterns of female rats given androgen resemble those of adult male rats. The reverse effect occurs in the male rats given estrogen. (Endocrinology76: 1047, 1965)
