Abstract
The lysine pool in M.lysodeikticus became depleted to nondetectable levels when the cells were incubated with aeration at 37[degree]C in a N-free medium containing a utilizable carbohydrate. Such starved cells and protoplasts prepared from them pooled exogenously supplied lysine to a comparable degree; moreover, both types of cell retained their originally high pool level for several hours without release of the amino acid. These findings suggest that the protoplast (cytoplasmic) membrane, rather than the cell wall, is responsible for the uptake and retention of pooled lysine in this organism. Keywords
