Abstract
The American Academy of Neurology has established a section on neurochemistry as its first neurologic speciality section. The historical background of neurochemistry from the times of antiquity to the present is reviewed briefly. Through the years, applications of chemistry to biologic problems have increased and problems dealing with the nervous system have shared in this trend. Neurochemistry, as currently defined, comprises 3 principal divisions chemical architecture of the nervous system, neural metabolism and neural activity. The scope of each division is, however, changing with the more recent developments in research methodology and knowledge. 149 references. Keywords
