Arteriographic Diagnosis of Pancreatic Lesions

Abstract
The method of choice for the angiographic diagnosis of early stages of a lesion in the pancreas is combined selective contrast material visualization of the celiac axis and the superior mesenteric artery. In 47 cases with clinically questionable signs of pancreatic lesions, an abnormality was diagnosed by angio-graphy in 15 (32%). In this series of 47 cases, 21 have been finally diagnosed as carcinoma (2 without surgery); in 12 of the 21 (57%) angiographic examinations were abnormal. A negative angiogram does not exclude the presence of a pancreatic lesion. The angiographic diagnosis of pancreatitis is rarely possible. In an abnormal arterio-gram, one cannot always differentiate between benign tumors, malignant tumors, or pancreatic cysts.
