Abstract
The mechanism of light up and down (infrared ⇄ visible) conversion in Cd:Yb,Er crystals is presented. It is shown that the temperature dependence of the efficiency of these processes is governed by the temperature dependence of the spectral overlap between Er and Yb ions.
