Abstract
Local topographic studies of thyroid tissue by means of I131 in 24 unselected cases of myxedema showed a frequency of 60% of ectopic thyroids in high-cervical locations, mostly in the lingual region. The global uptake of radioiodine in the ectopic thyroids has been studied and the results corroborate the conceptions of MacGirr and Hutchison as to the pathogenesis of myxedema being based upon thyroidal dysgenesis. A possible new method for treating myxedema is suggested.
