THE DETECTION MICROSCOPICALLY OF COLONIES OF SHIGELLA IN STOOL CULTURES

Abstract
A method is outlined for the microscopic examination of stool cultures utilizing obliquely transmitted illumination and modified media for isolation. The appearances of the colonies of the various bacterial species encountered are descr. Comparison of the efficiency of this microscopic method with a standard method widely used for culturing stools reveals that the microscopic method permits (1) differentiation of Shigella colonies from those of other enteric bacteria, (2) considerable saving of media, (3) serological grouping of Shigellae nearly 24 hrs. earlier than by the standard method, and (4) detection of the presence of intestinal pathogens in the stools of patients equally as well as does the standard method.
