Abstract
By (NH4)2SO4] and acetone fractiona-tion steps, a 45X conc. of the active albumin in hog kidney extracts was obtained, through the discard of inactive proteins, chiefly globulins. A standardized and reproducible assay method, based on the pressure reduction following 4 twice-daily injns., was constructed, and a unit of activity defined. Active albumins were prepared from hog kidney, spleen, muscle and blood. Horse serum afforded an exceptionally rich source of material. Activity was also found in a steroid extract of hog kidney. Such foreign protein materials as egg albumin and diphtheria antitoxin proved inactive. The pressure reduction is evidently a manifestation of a general response to one of a limited group of foreign agents, to which, however, the body can become adapted. This publication has 5 references indexed in Scilit:
