C-Reactive Protein during Pregnancy and in Cord Blood

Abstract
Sera of 119 pregnant women and 71 women in labor were examined for C-reactive protein (CRP). 25% to 32% of the pregnant women and 66% of the women in labor showed positive results. Only one of the 73 cord bloods examined showed the presence of CRP. CRP was found in the blood of very young babies suffering from bacterial infections. CRP determination was performed by the capillary precipitation method employing commercial CRP antiserum. The titer of antistreptolysin O examined concomittantly was the same as in the maternal blood in 24 cord bloods and higher in 26.
