Abstract
Photographs of the vegetative nuclear cycle of S. cerevisiae are presented which demonstrate the following: The nucleus is separate and distinct from the central vacuole of the cell and is in reality the structure descr. by Lindegren as the centrosome. A true mitotic process is descr. in which during interphase the chromosomes occur as long, delicate, beaded threads which contract at prophase into 2 dense rods and 2 dense granules. At this time a centriole appears which subsequently divides into 2 parts which migrate to the opposite poles of the nucleus to form a characteristic metaphase spindle. Subsequently the chromosomes are pulled apart and migrate to the poles, one daughter nucleus then migrating into the bud cell. It appears that there are 4 chromosomes in the vegetative diploid in this sp., although these may be paired. The observations presented do not support the work of Lindegren and his school. Keywords
