Abstract
Educational home visiting has been carried out for pre‐school children but it is rarely used for school‐age children, except where there are special problems. A case of home visiting in one school to increase the involvement of parents of all five‐ to eight‐year‐olds in the teaching of reading is reported. The visiting was part of a five‐year project in which over 100 children and their families participated. Three kinds of visit are identified: preliminary, consultative and special visits. The function of visiting in relation to continuity in children's education, adult literacy problems and non‐educational problems is discussed. The views of parents and teachers are reported. Implications for practice, including the problem of resources, who should visit and the significance of visiting in home‐school relations are explored. Keywords
