POTENTIAL INFECTIOUS HAZARDS OF LABORATORY TECHNIQUES II

Abstract
Air and surface samples reveal that opening an ampule containing lyophilized culture sealed under a vacuum sets free large numbers of organisms into the surrounding environment. Surrounding the point of ampule breakage with a 70% ethanol soaked cotton pledget greatly reduces aerosol production. Reconstitution of dried cultures by 3 different methods produced aerosols. Large numbers of organisms were recovered from the air as long as one hour after accidental breakage of ampules containing lyophilized cultures. A suitable method of decontamination after this type of accident is described.
