TREATMENT OF INTRACTABLE TEMPORAL LOBE EPILEPSY WITH PHENETURIDE

Abstract
Pheneturide was administered to 44 patients with intractable epilepsy of temporal lobe origin. In 36.4% of the patients the drug appeared to be effective when added to pre-existing medication. The drug was withdrawn in 14 patients due to the development of side-effects, drowsiness and ataxia being the commonest. Seven patients had raised serum alkaline phosphatase levels. No examples of blood dyscrasia were encountered. Pheneturide is of value in the treatment of temporal lobe epilepsy.
